The Volunteer Team, Inc., also sponsors
and provides assistance for numerous
special events for the public including
the annual Easter Egg Hunts at Rocky Gap
and Dan's Mountain, mountain bike races
at Green Ridge, Independence Day
activities at Rocky Gap, the Youth
Fishing Derbies (which were featured in
a 1997 Maryland Outdoors episode) at
Rocky Gap and Dan’s Mountain, a Memorial
Day Fun Fair for children camping at
Rocky Gap, the Labor Day Corn Roast at
Rocky Gap, car shows at Dan's Mountain
and Rocky Gap, and the annual Rocky Gap
State Park Haunted Campground and/or
Children's Halloween Extravaganza, as
well as the Mt. Reflections Christmas
Light Display at Rocky Gap. On Memorial
Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day
weekends, the Team also hosts Campground
Karaoke for campers at Rocky Gap.
The Team
has been honored twice with the
Governor's Award for Volunteerism. In
1998, the Team was recognized by
Governor Glendening, and in 2003,
Governor Ehrlich
honored the Team again!
Support is provided to park and forest
visitors on a continuing basis through
the Camp Host and Volunteer Ranger
programs. These volunteers are publicly
visible and help to promote goodwill and
understanding of the park to campers and
visitors.
Community-based organizations, churches,
and Scout groups are encouraged to
volunteer. Special clean up, gardening,
and trail projects are available, and
usually require only a short term
commitment on the part of the group or
organization.
The Volunteer Team, Inc., also offers
several social events throughout the
season such as the Annual Banquet, the
Spring Picnic, the Summer Cookout, and
the Fall Hot Dog Roast.
Volunteer schedules are very flexible.
Volunteers may commit to a weekly or
monthly schedule or help on an as-needed
basis. No amount of time donated is too
small! Many of the projects are done in
the evening or on the weekends so that
working volunteers and students may
participate.
