The Volunteer Team was initiated in 1992
in response to budgetary cuts throughout
the State Forest and Park Service. A
core group of dedicated individuals
began to volunteer personal time to
maintain resources and preserve programs
at the three local sites. Since then,
hundreds of volunteers, individuals, and
groups, have participated in the
program, logging in excess of 250,000
hours.
In 1995, the Volunteer Team became
incorporated and was granted non-profit
organization status. Its new
fund-raising capabilities are used to
support various projects and special
events at Rocky Gap, Dan’s Mountain and
Green Ridge.
Volunteers are involved in many aspects
of operations and maintenance at the
three sites. Maintenance work includes,
but is not limited to, maintaining
campground and day-use facilities, trail
maintenance, gardening, building picnic
tables, creating fish habitats, cleaning
grounds, and construction projects, as
well as manning of the Volunteer Team
Snack Shack at the Rocky Gap State Park
Campground, and the Chuck Wagon at Dan's
Mountain State Park. During the
Christmas season, the Team also manages
Santa's Snacks at the Mt. Reflections
Light Display at Rocky Gap.
Since it's inception, the Volunteer
Team, Inc., has sponsored and funded
multiple playground construction projects
in the Rocky Gap Campground at the camp
store. Adult swings have also been added
to the Campground to enhance the beach
area. Two swings were installed at Dan's
Mountain State Park. The Team built a
basketball court in Rocky Gap's
campground for young campers. Most
recently, the Team built a game room in
the Rocky Gap campground.
